Average Bathtub Volume - Important Considerations

The average bathtub size has changed tremendously over the last decade. Newer designs have been manufactured to cater for a wider market and different sizes of bathrooms. The average bathtub volume has also increased as a result. Generally, many bathtubs still maintain the standard size of between 5 and 8 feet. It is important to understand different bathtub dimensions in order to accurately estimate its average volume. You must also take into account that bathtubs have different shapes and sizes, which influences the volume.

Bathtub Dimensions

Typically, a standard bath has dimensions of about 60 by 30 inches on the inside. The sides of the tub are sloped, which means the bottom is narrower than the upper part, each having different measurements. On average, the bottom is estimated to be about 45 by 22 inches, while the top is 55 by 24 inches. The material for the construction of the tub will have minimal impact on these measurements, much of which is negligible. In light of this, fiberglass and cast iron tubs will have roughly the same measurements.

Measurements When The Tub Is Full

On average, most people use about 30 to 50 gallons of water in a bathtub. It is important to appreciate the fact that this is a very rough estimate because bathtub depths vary, and this estimate is for a regular tub. Luxurious deep soaking tubs such as whirlpools use more water, but this largely depends on how deep you like your bath water. The 30 to 50 gallons average volume is for a tub that is half full to allow for water displacement once the occupant gets in. However, to completely fill a bathtub, it is estimated that you will use about 100 gallons of water.

Bathtub water usage will also affect your energy consumption, so it is important to beware of how much you are using if you want to cut on energy bills. This is especially so for people with deep soaking tubs.

Soaking Tubs

Soaking tubs, especially those used for therapeutic purposes, use more water than the standard tub. A 4-foot soaking tub will hold up to 100 gallons of water and can accommodate two people. An 8-foot round tub on the other hand can hold as much as 700 gallons. Apart from adding a touch of romance to your everyday bathing, sharing a bath with your partner can reduce water usage significantly. This is advisable especially for people with deep luxurious tubs.

Antique Style Bathtubs

Antique style baths will have different capacities depending on their style. Those with a curved support are normally 72 by 37 inches by 27 inches. These can hold an average of between 30 to 60 gallons, again depending on the size. Their maximum capacity exceeds that of a standard bathtub. Understanding bathtub volumes is important so that you do not end up buying a tub when your system lacks the capacity to supply the water. Knowing your bathtub water consumption will also allow you to utilize your bathtub efficiently.
